After a long sabbatical post her first film
Dhobi Ghat
, Kiran Rao is back to the director’s chair, and is ready with her second film
Laapataa Ladies
, produced by ex-husband Aamir Khan. In an interview, Kiran had revealed that the film wouldn’t have been possible without Aamir, as it was him who found the script at Cinestan script writing competition. The film had its premiere at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival where Kiran Rao received a round of applause from the audience, followed by a standing ovation.
The makers not too long ago released the teaser of the film and it has already generated enough buzz, and promises a lot of laughter and adventure. However, what makes this project even more remarkable is the exhaustive casting journey that led to the selection of the film's lead actors.
The casting process for "Laapataa Ladies" was no ordinary affair; it can only be described as a cinematic odyssey. Kiran Rao and her team auditioned a staggering 5,000 aspiring actors to find the perfect trio that would lead this comedy extravaganza. The dedication to this task was evident, as the selected lead cast endured multiple rounds of grueling screen tests over a span of two months. This rigorous selection process underlines the filmmakers' commitment to creating the perfect ensemble for the film.
In an interview Kiran broke down the reasons for a long gap between her two films. She mentioned that she took a long time to write Dhobi Ghat as well, since she was drawing from personal experiences and it was a world she knew. And when it came to her second film, Kiran said that it was a challenge as she wanted to push boundaries, take risks and explore all the genres. So, she was writing but also in the meantime she was doing a lot of things like setting up Paani foundation with Aamir, producing Dangal and also raising their son Azad. Kiran said that thanks to all the writing she did in the last few years, she has many projects lined up which will come out soon. The filmmaker also revealed that getting back in the director’s chair once again was like jumping into the deep end as there had been a considerable time since she last helmed a project. She added that directing Laapataa Ladies has been a huge learning curve as it had so many characters, a rural setting, was a comedy satire and had songs too.
Laapataa Ladies is adapted from an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The screenplay and dialogue have been masterfully written by Sneha Desai, with additional dialogues contributed by Divyanidhi Sharma.
