Aamir Khan hoping to begin work on 'Mahabharat'; eyes multiple directors for epic on 'Lord Of The Rings' scale

Bollywood star Aamir Khan is preparing to bring one of the biggest Indian epics - The Mahabharat - to the big screen and he is going all out to set it up on an unprecedented scale.
In his latest interview, the actor revealed his plans for his next major project that he confirmed, will see him take on the role of a producer. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Khan is now setting his sights on the film that he calls one of his "biggest ambitions" and added, "I'm hoping to start work on this year."
While opening up about the film, he also confirmed that The Mahabharat will be a multi-film adaptation, much like the Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although fans may be eager to see this project commence this year, he clarified, "It will take a while because the writing process will take a few years."
Though it’s still undecided whether he will act in the films, he assured, “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part.”

Khan, also addressed speculation whether he would direct the epic himself, and suggested that the sheer scale of the Mahabharat demands a broader vision. “I don't think you can tell the Mahabharat in one film, so it will be multiple films. I am looking at the large scale.” he explained, noting that as the narrative will unfold across multiple instalments, he added, "It's too early to say, but we may need multiple directors."
Aamir has been working on the idea of the ambitious film for several years. Back in 2018 it was reported that the actor walked out of Rakesh Sharma biopic so he could work on the film that was rumoured to be mounted on a budget of Rs 1000 crore.
Later, in 2022, when asked for an update on the dream project, Aamir told Galatta Plus, “When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are not just making a film. You are performing a yagya. It is not just a film, it is much more. And, that is why I am not ready for it yet."
