Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya in New York after the premiere of their film Guru, which was directed by Mani Ratnam. It has been reported in the past that, while Abhsihek was filming in New York for another past project, he used to stand on the balcony of his hotel room and would wish, it would be nice if he and Aishwarya were married. And years later, after Guru’s premiere, Abhishek took Aishwarya to the same balcony and proposed to her and she said YES!

Back then not many were aware that Abhishek had proposed to her using one of the rings she had worn during the shoot of Guru. In 2010, in an interview, Aishwarya opened up about Abhishek’s proposal with a fake ring. But she also quipped that he is original and real, just like their relationship. She added that there is nothing predictable or boring about their lives and they nurture each other and also highlighted that Abhishek’s gesture was spontaneous and meaningful. She also joked that God has been kind and they can certainly afford those standard rocks.
