Desktop mode coming to Android, leaked source code suggests

A recent report based on a leaked source code suggests that Google is preparing a desktop mode feature similar to Samsung's DeX and Motorola's Smart Connect big-screen interface. Actually, the first traces of a desktop mode were found back in 2023, but it appears that Google is getting close to releasing the feature.

Reportedly, the UI needs more polishing, and it's unlikely to arrive with Android 16. We will most likely see it launch with Android 17 on the next-generation Pixels.

The feature is labeled as "Android Desktop Mode" and offers several cool features such as multitasking capabilities with resizable windows, traditional desktop-like navigation elements, app management system similar to a desktop OS like Windows or Chrome OS, seamless transition between mobile and a desktop interface, etc.

The feature will work when you connect the phone to an external display using the USB-C port, but we suspect a wireless connection will also be possible, although it's too early to tell. Samsung and Motorola, for example, offer wireless connection options with their desktop modes. And if we had to guess, the feature will be exclusive to Pixel phones at first before reaching other Android phones.
