From Kirk Alyn to Henry Cavill: Every actor who has been ‘Superman’
‘Superman,’ the iconic character that has been alive in the hearts for decades, has seen many actors over the years, shaping and creating the legacy. It’s not just a story written on the pages, but the flame that has been passed down through generations. David Corenswet’s ‘Superman’ is about to shine at the silver screen, and the weight upon his shoulders is heavy. From Kirk Alyn to Tyler Hoechlin, let’s take a look at all the actors who wore the renowned red cape.

2/10
Kirk Alyn
Kirk Alyn, the trailblazing actor, set the foundation and expectations as the first ever ‘Superman’ to exist on screen. Debuting in 1948, he starred in the titular role in the live-action serial ‘Superman,’ followed by its sequel ‘Atom Man vs. Superman’ in 1950. Each installment consisted of 15 chapters, where they kept cliffhangers to keep the audience engaged. His portrayal of ‘Superman’ became a significant part of history and was certainly loved by the audience despite the not-so-good technology, according to Hindustan Times.

3/10
George Reeves
George Reeves continued the flame and starred in the 1951 film ‘Superman and the Mole Men.’ His ‘Superman’ became a household name and children’s favourite for being earnest, morally upright, and kind. Furthermore, he played the role in the beloved television series, ‘Adventures of Superman,’ which aired from 1952 to 1958. Unfortunately, George Reeves died in 1959 due to uncertain circumstances.

4/10
Christopher Reeve
After two decades of radio silence, Christopher Reeve changed the gears and shaped the newer generations with his portrayal of Superman. He featured in the 1978 hit ‘Superman: The Movie,’ which was directed by Richard Donner. Reeve’s character was hailed as a benchmark for his contrasting characterisation of mild-mannered Clark Kent and heroic icon Superman. After starring in three sequels, in 1995, he met with a tragic horse riding accident that left him advocating for spinal cord injury research until his demise in 2004.

5/10
Dean Cain
Dean Cain played a laidback hero behind the backdrop of romance with Lois Lane (played by Terry Hatcher) in the television series, ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.’ Dean’s character was focused heavily on a humanistic and journalistic approach, with occasional traditional action sequences. The series, which aired from 1993 to 1997, earned Cain his deserved fame and love from the audience. Offering a fresh perspective, Dean’s Superman is hailed for its realistic persona.

6/10
Tom Welling
Tom Welling played a small-town boy with his coming-of-age story, giving the character arc of the comic book character. Unlike the previous legends, he did not wear the red cape costume until the final days of the series. Welling starred in ‘Smallville,’ which aired from 2001 to 2011, where he offered a grounded perspective of identity, friendship, and development through personal struggles. Redefining the origin series, Tom later reprised his role in Batwoman's ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover.

7/10
Brandon Routh
Brandon Routh’s Superman came into existence to honour one of the original portrayals of the character by Director Richard Donner, continuing Christopher Reeve’s storyline in the 2006 film ‘Superman Returns.’ While the critics praised his performance for accurately portraying the contrast between Clark Kent and Superman, the film was a miserable box office success. Thirteen years later, Routh played the older version of his role in the multiverse crossover ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ as a Kingdom Come storyline.

8/10
Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill, the iconic Superman, brought a darker, sophisticated, and grounded version in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013). Introducing the first-ever non-American ‘Superman,’ Cavill focused on raw power and a conflicted persona. He played the character again in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ ‘Justice League’ (2017 and 2021), and a brief cameo in the post-credit scenes of ‘Black Adam’ (2022). While some critics appreciated his commanding presence and vulnerable approach, others criticised his portrayal of a darker version as it did not align with the true essence of Superman.

9/10
Tyler Hoechlin
Tyler Hoechlin debuted his Superman in the 2016 series ‘Supergirl,’ following as the lead character in ‘Superman & Lois’ (2021). While his earlier narrative was of a supporting and experienced hero, Tyler later went on to play a family-oriented Superman, focusing on parenthood as well as heroic expectations. Aligning with the traditional values, Hoechlin’s hero is optimistic and kind, along with a masterful balance as Clark Kent. Tyler’s role exists in another universe, but the continuity suits the tone of the series.

10/10
David Corenswet
David Corenswet, the upcoming Superman, is set to take the reins of his predecessors in ‘Superman’ (2025), starring alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Directed by James Gunn, the fans are excited and thrilled to experience the absolute cinema. As the cast continues to make headlines, the ‘Superman’ fans have higher expectations with a question: Can he step into the iconic shoes?
