India have ushered in a new era in Test cricket, naming 25-year-old Shubman Gill as captain for the upcoming five-match series against England. Gill replaces Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from the longest format on May 7.

He becomes India's 37th Test captain and will lead the side in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, starting June 20. Gill made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in 2020 and has since played 32 matches, scoring 1893 runs with five centuries and seven half-centuries.

The squad marks a generational shift with several senior players stepping away. Alongside Rohit, veteran batter Virat Kohli and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have also retired from Test cricket.

Their absence signals a new beginning for Indian cricket in the red-ball format.Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain and first-choice wicketkeeper. The batting unit includes young and promising names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Karun Nair. Dhruv Jurel has been retained as the backup wicketkeeper, while Nitish Kumar Reddy continues as a batting all-rounder.
