IIT Bhubaneswar, NISER Host Three-Day Mathematics Problem Solving Camp for Odisha Students

BHUBANESWAR:

Mathematicians

from

IIT Bhubaneswar

,

NISER Bhubaneswar

, and other educational institutions taught undergraduate students from different colleges in Odisha about techniques for solving mathematics problems at a three-day camp that started on Monday.
This

Mathematics Problem Solving Camp

was inaugurated by Law Minister

Prithiviraj Harichandan

and Health Minister

Mukesh Mahaling

on Monday.

The objective of the camp was to identify, nurture, and prepare a pool of brilliant mathematicians who will take the lead in the scientific and educational landscape of the country, including Odisha.
More than 40 selected students from 18 districts of Odisha are participating in this camp. Special focus was on govt-run colleges in rural areas and socially, economically, and educationally backward districts of Odisha.
Harichandan spoke on the importance of logical analysis and open-mindedness in solving life's problems, as they do in solving mathematics problems. He also appreciated the initiative to provide a platform for young mathematicians of the state to harness their knowledge and skills under the guidance of experts.

Mahaling urged institutes like IIT, NISER, and the Institute of Mathematics and Applications to conduct such programmes for school students, which can nurture the mathematics skills of the children of the state from a very young age.
Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, handled a session on ‘Problem Solving’, wherein he showed with examples how general discipline-independent strategies help solve a variety of real-life problems. He stated that the mindset that one needs specialised knowledge from a certain area to solve problems is what prevents people from solving problems.

He said communication, collaboration, and critical thinking are the three skills necessary for success in real life.
A team of enthusiastic professors from NISER, IIT Bhubaneswar, and various colleges in Odisha, under the

Math-Odisha100

initiative, have been working on improving mathematics education at the undergraduate level by conducting several programmes in the last few years.
