Team India has an advantage going into the match against the Afghan Atalan. Besides being the hosts of the tournament, India have won two out of the three ODIs they have played against Afghanistan so far, with one game ending as a tie.
In ODI World Cups, India and Afghanistan have met only once, in 2019, with the Men in Blue winning the contest.
Before the India vs Afghanistan match in the 2023 World Cup, we take a look at the previous three ODI encounters between the two sides.
India vs Afghanistan, 2014 Asian Cup
The first ODI between the two sides took place at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur as the Men in Blue crushed the Afghans by eight wickets. Afghanistan batted first in this game and were bowled out for 159 in 45.2 overs. Samiullah Shinwari was the top scorer for them with 50 as only three batters managed to cross the 10-run mark.
Ravindra Jadeja, the player of the match, was the pick of the bowlers for India with four wickets for 30. Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets, Mohammed Shami two and Amit Mishra one.
In reply, opener Ajinkya Rahane scored 56 and Shikhar Dhawan smashed 60 as India completed the chase in 32.2 overs.
India vs Afghanistan, 2018 Asia Cup
A memorable game for Afghanistan as they tied the match in a thrilling fashion. They batted first in this game as well and scored 252/8 with opener Mohammad Shahzad blasting 124 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Despite a middle-order collapse, Mohammad Nabi (64) and Najibullah Zadran (20) helped Afghanistan cross the 250-run mark. Ravindra Jadeja was the best bower for India with three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav took two.
The top three batters — KL Rahul (60), Ambati Rayudu (57) and Dinesh Karthik (44) — gave India a solid start but a middle and lower order collapse put India in a precarious position. Still at 240/7 from 48 overs and 13 more needed, India expected Jadeja and Kuldeep to finish the job. They, however, lost Kuldeep and Siddarth Kaul in the next over and Jadeja on the penultimate ball of the match as Afghanistan secured a famous tie with India bowled out on 252.
Shahzad was declared the player of the match for his century.
India vs Afghanistan, 2019 World Cup
The last time India played Afghanistan in an ODI was in the 2019 World Cup in England as they won by 11 runs in another close match. India posted 224/8 with Virat Kohli (67) and Kedar Jadhav (52) scoring fifties in the low-scoring match at the Rose Bowl. Gulbadin Naib and Nabi took two wickets each.
Nabi’s 52 and a knock of 36 from Rahmat Shah took Afghanistan close to the target but Mohammed Shami’s four-wicket haul completed the job for India as Afghans were bowled out for 213 in 49.5 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah was named the player of the match for his bowling figures of 2/39.
