Having registered three victories in as many outings in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup, hosts India start firm favourites in their upcoming match against Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday.

The Men in Blue began their campaign with a six-wicket victory over heavyweights Australia, overhauling the 200-run target set by Pat Cummins’ men despite being reduced to 2/3 at the start of their chase. That would be followed by a clinical eight-wicket win against Afghanistan in Delhi and a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

Bangladesh too began their campaign with a win, beating Afghanistan in Dharamsala by six wickets. They would however, end up getting outplayed by England and New Zealand — the two finalists in the previous edition — by 137 runs and eight wickets respectively.

The Tigers, thus, enter Thursday’s contest under a lot of pressure, for a third defeat in four outings will severely dent their hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals for the first time ever.

Though they enter the match as the firm favourites, India will do well to remember the threat that Bangladesh pose. Bangladesh, after all, have the upper hand as far as recent matches are concerned, having won three of their last four fixtures including the Super Four clash in the recently-concluded Asia Cup in Colombo.

The Tigers had also registered a shock victory the first time these two teams met in ICC’s showpiece event, which would ultimately lead to the Indians crashing out of the 2007 World Cup in embarrassing fashion.

That, however, would be the only time India would get bested by Bangladesh in the World Cup, and would go on to win the next three encounters.

Ahead of the India-Bangladesh encounter, we revisit each of their four meetings across ICC World Cups:

2007 World Cup, Group B match in Port of Spain: Bangladesh win by 5 wickets

A little over two years after registering their first-ever victory against the Indians across formats and eight years after making their debut in the biggest cricketing event of them all, Bangladesh would finally meet India in the ICC Cricket World Cup. And they would end up shocking their more fancied neighbours with a five-wicket victory at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Mashrafe Mortaza led the way with a haul of 4/38 while Mohammad Rafique (3/35) and Abdur Razzak (3/38) grabbed three wickets each as Bangladesh restricted India to a sub-par 191. The trio of Tamim Iqbal (51), Mushfiqur Rahim (56 not out) and Shakib Al Hasan (53) — all three of whom are still active players — would then help chase the target down with five wickets and nine deliveries to spare.

2011 World Cup, Group B match in Dhaka: India win by 102 runs

The Men in Blue would avenge the five-wicket loss that played a key role in sending them packing from the 2007 World Cup four years later. India, led by MS Dhoni this time, squared off against co-hosts Bangladesh in the 2011 tournament opener at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, where Virender Sehwag (175) and Virat Kohli (100) smashed centuries to help post a mammoth total of 370/4.

Bangladesh, in reply, got off to a promising start and were 188/2 at one stage thanks to solid knocks from Tamim (70) and Shakib (55), but the scoreboard pressure meant they were one wicket away from a collapse. Bangladesh did manage to bat out their quota of overs, but could only muster 283/9 in the end.

2015 World Cup, quarter-final in Melbourne: India win by 115 runs

India-Bangladesh contests have had their fair share of controversies over the years and among them was Rohit Sharma’s contentious no-ball in their quarter-final meeting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2015. Rohit was caught at deep midwicket on 90 after hitting a high full toss from Rubel Hossain in that direction, only for the square-leg umpire to raise his arm indicating a no-ball, with replays showing the call to be a marginal one.

Rohit would go on to add another 47 runs, bringing up the first of his seven (and counting) World Cup centuries in the process as the Men in Blue posted a commanding 302/6 on the board. Bangladesh, in reply, hardly got going in their chase after losing wickets from the outset. Umesh Yadav led the way with a haul of 4/31 as India bowled Bangladesh out for 193 in reply, storming into the semi-finals with a commanding 109-run victory.

A large section of Bangladeshi fans though, remain adamant about the contentious no-ball turning the game on its head and robbing the Tigers of a well-deserved place in the semi-finals.

2019 World Cup, Round Robin match at The Oval: India win by 30 runs

Rohit would collect back-to-back World Cup hundreds against Bangladesh in the 2019 edition, smashing a 92-ball 104 against the Tigers at Edgbaston in Birmingham to power the Indians to a challenging 314/9 after opting to bat. Not only was it back-to-back World Cup tons against the Bangladeshis, but it was also the fourth of his five centuries in that tournament and he ended up equalling the record for most tons in a single World Cup edition that had been set by Kumar Sangakkara in 2015 with that knock.

Like Rohit, Shakib was having quite the golden run in that tournament and led from the front with a patient 66, though Bangladesh’s hopes were dashed by the time he was dismissed, leaving them at 179/6. All-rounders Sabbir Rahman (36) and Mohammad Saifuddin (51 not out) did give the Indians a scare with a 66-run seventh-wicket stand, and though the latter remained not out till the very end, Bangladesh fell short by 28 runs after getting bowled out for 286.
