It was a birthday to remember for Virat Kohli, who went level with the great Sachin Tendulkar with an unbeaten knock of 101, helping India post a total of 326/5.
In reply, the Indian bowlers never allowed South African batters to settle down, with Ravindra Jadeja scalping five wickets to see the Proteas off for 83 in just 27.1 overs.
The win also confirmed top spot for India as far as standings are concerned, while the Proteas will hope to remain in the top two with a win over Afghanistan in their last round-robin game, and given Australia slip up.
Records were broken and milestones achieved in India’s big win over South Africa. Let’s now take a look at some of the statistics:
—With his century against South Africa, Virat Kohli equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries. While Kohli and Sachin are joint first on the list, Rohit Sharma is behind the duo with 31 ODI tons.
—Ravindra Jadeja finished with second-best figures by an Indian spinner in World Cups. Jadeja finished with figures of 5/33 on Sunday. Only Yuvraj Singh (5/31) has better figures among Indian spinners, when he registered these figures against Ireland in the 2011 World Cup.
—By runs, this was South Africa’s biggest defeat in ODIs. South Africa went onto lose to India on Sunday by 243 runs, eclipsing their 182-run loss to Pakistan in Port Elizabeth in 2002.
—South Africa recorded their joint second-lowest total in ODIs on Sunday. The Proteas were dismissed for 83, which was also the score when they were all out for, against England twice, once in 2006 and again in 2022. South Africa’s lowest all out score remains 69 against Australia in 1993.
—This was the first time in ODIs this year that South Africa had failed to hit even one six.
— India have finished first in the group/league stage in each of the last three editions (2015, 2019 and 2023)
