BEIRUT: The US must rein in Israel to avert a regional spillover of the war with Hamas, Iran's top diplomat said Friday in Beirut, adding Tehran was seeking to safeguard Lebanon’s security. “America wants to give Israel a chance to destroy Gaza, and this is... a grave mistake,” foreign minister
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian
said.
Looking to hold off a spillover of fighting into Lebanon, Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Beirut on Thursday. “Lebanon’s security and peace is important to us,” he said after meeting with Lebanese PM Najib Mikati. But he did not rule out the chance of an escalation. He warned if Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip don’t stop immediately, the violence could spread to other parts of West Asia.
Amir-Abdollahian also met Hezbollah chief Hasan Nasrallah to discuss “potential outcomes” and the “positions that must be taken” in light of latest developments.
