Gurinder
Chadha
has now teased a sequel to her blockbuster directorial, giving fans of Bend It Like Beckham a strong reason to rejoice. Bend It Like Beckham released in 2002 and starred Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley in lead roles.
Speaking about a possible sequel to the movie, the filmmaker told Metro UK, "I never really wanted to make a sequel to the film, because I just thought the way Parminder and Keira played it, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Archie Panjabi, I could never really follow that up and create that same magic in the same way." But the new found interest in football has got her rethinking. “But with the recent success of football, I just feel like I’m starting to percolate an idea for a possible sequel of some kind,” Chadha stated.
Gurinder Chadha not just -produced and directed the movie, but she also co-wrote it with Guljit Bindra and Paul Mayeda Berges. The film also starred Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anupam Kher, Juliet Stevenson, Shaznay Lewis and Archie Panjabi.
Earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Gurinder Chadha had revealed how it was difficult to find funding for this movie, which is now a cult classic. Speaking at the annual Winston Baker International Film Finance Forum in Cannes, in partnership with the Marché du Film, she stated, “I had been struggling to make this film because I really believed the world was changing at this point and I believed that my cultural paradigm was relevant and I was fresh and new to British film makers. I’d written a script with my husband Paul [Mayeda Berges] and it was very international…and a very human story and I just didn’t understand why the gatekeepers were passing on it.”
Currently, Gurinder Chadha is working on an original musical feature for Disney, inspired by a dynamic princess from Indian history. Lindy Goldstein ('The Nutcracker' and the 'Four Realms') is producing the project.
