Jonah Platt, son of Snow White producer Marc Platt, has publicly criticized actress Rachel Zegler, blaming her controversial social media posts for the film’s underwhelming box office performance.
In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Jonah responded to criticism of his father following a Variety report that detailed how Marc Platt, reportedly at Disney’s request, flew to New York City last August to ask Zegler to remove a "free Palestine" tweet. The post had been shared while the actress was thanking fans for supporting the Snow White trailer.
A commenter called Platt’s actions “creepy” and “uncalled for,” prompting Jonah to defend his father and slam Zegler’s behaviour. "You really want to do this?" Jonah began and went on to say, "Yeah, my dad, the producer of an enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand his 20-year-old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for."
He continued, "This is called adult responsibility and accountability. And her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office. Free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want in your private employment without repercussions. Tens of thousands of people worked on that film, and she hijacked the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all the colleagues and crew and blue-collar workers who depend on that movie to be successful. Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged."
Jonah, known for hosting the Being Jewish podcast, has been a vocal advocate against antisemitism and previously criticized public figures like Kanye West for making antisemitic statements.
Marc Platt has also addressed the topic of actors making political statements. On his son’s podcast, he discussed how he manages stars expressing political views, referencing Wicked actors Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s pro-Palestine comments.
“No decent human being wants any suffering in humanity from decent people,” he said, adding, "... So my way of dealing with it is — when the moment is right — to have that conversation, where it can be heard and not in the midst of anger. And I feel good about those conversations that I’ve been having."
Snow White opened to an underwhelming $43 million at the domestic box office last weekend. The $270 million live-action remake was projected to earn $100 million globally but fell short with $87.3 million.
