The benefits of Ayurveda have been known to astonish people across the globe. The science that goes behind it is so strong that it is hard to debate against it. Perhaps, that is one of the reasons why Bollywood's 'Manikarnika' aka Kangana Ranaut also swears by some of the Ayurveda rules.
The actress disclosed that she follows traditional Ayurvedic principles by drinking water from a silver glass every day during an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, when she was promoting her last film ‘Emergency.’
Silver glass and Ayurveda
It was a very candid moment during the interview when the actress sipped few drops of water out of her siver glass in between her conversation with the podcast host. When asked about her silver glass, Kangana said, “Bahut purana hai (It’s a very old silver glass).”
She further explained the reason behind using it: “Moon… sheetalta… jinko pitta zyada hota hai (The moon… coolness… for those who have excess pitta dosha),” highlighting that silver is believed to have cooling properties, especially helpful for those with pitta imbalance.
Cooling properties
In India, drinking water from silver vessels has a long history, particularly among royal families. Silver is thought to have cooling properties and aid in water purification in Ayurveda. Although this theory is supported by conventional wisdom, there are differing views in contemporary science regarding whether it has a direct bearing on
pitta dosha balance

Silver's antibacterial benefits
Dr. Anjana Kalia, an Ayurvedic doctor and nutritionist at Anjana Kalia’s Diet Clinic, shared her views with The Indian Express. She explained, “In Ayurveda, silver is believed to have cooling properties that can help in balancing pitta dosha. Pitta represents the fire and water elements in the body, and when it is imbalanced, it can lead to issues like acidity, inflammation, and excessive heat. Silver, being naturally cooling, is thought to help in calming this excess heat. However, while traditional Ayurvedic practices support this belief, there is limited modern scientific research to confirm its direct impact on pitta dosha.”
Dr. Kalia also pointed out another benefit of using silver vessels. She said, “Storing water in silver vessels can help kill harmful bacteria and keep the water pure.” She added that this was particularly important in ancient times when advanced water purification methods were not available. Some scientific studies today support silver’s antimicrobial properties, suggesting it can contribute to cleaner drinking water.
