Director Prithviraj Sukumaran's much-anticipated movie '
L2: Empuraan
', starring Mohanlal, has taken the
box office
by storm. The action-packed political thriller, which was released on March 27, has now surpassed the overseas collection of Yash-starrer 'KGF Chapter 1'.
According to Sacnilk, 'L2: Empuraan' has amassed an impressive Rs 241.65 crore globally in just nine days since its release. This feat pushes the film past the previous record-holder '
Manjummel Boys
', which had earned Rs 240 crore over its entire theatrical run, and marks a new chapter for Malayalam films on the commercial front.
Domestically, the movie has secured Rs 91.15 crore net and Rs 106.65 crore gross. Meanwhile, the overseas market has contributed a staggering Rs 135 crore to its tally, helping it achieve this record-breaking figure. With this, the film has even overtaken the lifetime earnings of Yash's 2018 Kannada blockbuster 'KGF Chapter 1', which stood at Rs 238 crore.
'L2: Empuraan' has become the first Malayalam film to secure a worldwide distributor share exceeding Rs 100 crore.
L2: Empuraan - Official Trailer
While Malayalam cinema has long been celebrated for its strong storytelling and content-rich films, it has often lagged behind other South Indian industries in terms of box office returns. Only recently have films like 2018, which grossed Rs 180 crore worldwide, and 'Manjummel Boys' begun to change that narrative. The movie has already broken several records within the first nine days of its release.
'L2: Empuraan' stars Mohanlal in the lead, alongside a powerful ensemble cast including Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, and Prithviraj himself. The movie will have a third part, '
L3: The Beginning
'.
