On Sunday, Ekana Stadium in Lucknow was buzzing as India took on England in a key ODI World Cup 2023 match. The BCCI orchestrated a spectacular light show during the mid-innings break, delighting the fans in attendance. And just as the scene was set, the DJ at the venue set the atmosphere on fire by playing the iconic song ‘Chale Chalo’ from the movie Lagaan as England limped in their chase of India’s 230-run target.

This song had an uncanny resemblance to India, England, and cricket. It was an iconic song from Bollywood classic Lagaan that portrayed the historical connection between India and England during the pre-independence era. And, well, social media buzzed with demands of ‘teen guna lagaan’ as Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue tripped the champions.

As the contest unfolded, Jos Buttler and his team founded themselves in dire straits at 81/6 after Moeen Ali’s dismissal. The DJ seized the moment and played the famous ‘Chale Chalo’ song from Lagaan, aptly capturing the spirit of the match and further thrilling the crowd.

The Indian bowlers were on song as they wreaked havoc on England’s batting lineup in Lucknow, securing India’s sixth consecutive victory in the ODI World Cup 2023. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja rose to the occasion, thwarting England’s chase well in advance, even as they were tasked with surmounting a relatively modest total of 229/9.

IND vs ENG: Shami shows he’s more than just a replacement

Earlier in the day. India captain Rohit Sharma laid the foundation for this score on an uneven, turgid Lucknow pitch, where some deliveries moved unpredictably and the bounce was inconsistent.

India were asked to bat first for the first time in the tournament and were rocked early with Chris Woakes and David Willey dismissing Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli (for a duck), and Shreyas Iyer. KL Rahul joined hands with Rohit on 40 and slowly started rebuilding the innings. Despite challenging conditions, Rohit displayed a fairly brisk pace, reaching his half-century in 66 balls.

Late order runs from Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah pushed the total to 239, which proved to be 100 runs too many for England to chase down. With this win, India have once again gone to the top of the points table.
