Mahashivratri 2025: Facts about Lord Shiva for kids

A major Hindu festival, Mahashivratri is observed every year in honour of the deity Shiva. It celebrates Lord Shiva's divine energy and commemorates his wedding with Goddess Parvati.

Shiva is called Mahadev, the greatest god, and is always seen meditating on Mount Kailash. This teaches kids the importance of focus, inner peace, and self-discipline. Meditation helps in calming the mind, improving concentration, and connecting with oneself, just like Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva is known as the Destroyer in the Hindu Trinity, alongside Brahma (Creator) and Vishnu (Preserver). But destruction isn’t negative—it means clearing old energies to bring transformation and renewal.

Shiva’s third eye represents wisdom and destruction. When he opens it, it burns ignorance and evil to ashes. This teaches children that we must see beyond what is visible—understanding deeper meanings in life.

Shiva wears a serpent around his neck, showing his control over fear and death. This teaches kids to overcome fear, be courageous, and understand that true power lies in self-control and wisdom.

Shiva wears a crescent moon on his head, symbolizing control over time and emotions. The waxing and waning moon teaches kids that life has ups and downs, but we must stay calm and balanced, just like Lord Shiva. It also represents peace and wisdom.

Shiva’s trident (Trishul) has three sharp edges, representing mind, body, and soul or past, present, and future. It teaches that we must control our emotions, actions, and thoughts to live a balanced life. It also symbolizes destroying evil, ignorance, and desires to achieve peace.

Shiva applies bhashma (holy ash) on his body, representing detachment from materialism. It teaches that life is temporary, and we should focus on good deeds and wisdom rather than material possessions. This inspires kids to value simplicity, humility, and kindness over wealth.

Shiva is the husband of Goddess Parvati and father of Ganesha and Kartikeya. Despite his powerful form, he is a loving family man. His story teaches kids about love, respect for family, and balancing responsibilities while following one’s spiritual journey.
