Makar Sankranti, an Indian festival celebrated every year around the second week of January. The festivities mark the transition of the end of the winter solstice, symbolizing longer days and the arrival of warmer weather. Local festivals around harvest symbolizes new beginnings, positivity, and prosperity.
This year in 2025, January 14 is being observed as a local holiday in many states. It is a day of vibrant celebration in schools across the country, marking three significant festivals: Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Hazrat Ali’s Birthday.
School holidays announced across India
As the winter chill grips parts of North India, various districts have extended school vacations for students. Below is a detailed list of school holiday schedules across several states and cities:
Ghaziabad School Holidays
Due to the cold wave, District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh notified the extension of winter vacations for classes 1 to 8. The schools will be closed for students until January 18. However, employees of the educational institutions will still be required to report to work. The order applies to all councils and secondary schools affiliated with the UP Board, CBSE, ICSE, and other boards.
Patna School Holidays
The district magistrate of Patna has prohibited all educational activities up to class 8 in schools, Anganwadi centres, and pre-schools until January 15, considering children’s health amid the cold wave. For classes above 8, teaching time has been restricted to 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Rajasthan School Holidays
In Rajasthan, schools in Jaipur, Dausa, Sikar, Bundi, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Pali, Beawar, Dholpur, and Jhalawar will remain closed till January 14 for classes up to 8 due to the cold wave. Classes 9 to 12 will operate with revised timings starting from 10 am.
Gorakhpur School Holidays
Schools in Gorakhpur, including government, Anganwadi, and private educational institutions, are closed until January 14. Classes will resume on January 15.
Tamil Nadu School and College Holidays
Due to Pongal, schools in Tamil Nadu will remain closed till January 20. This applies not only to schools but also to colleges and government offices. Some private schools were also closed on January 13.
Telangana School Holidays
The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has announced holidays for all intermediate colleges across the state in celebration of Makar Sankranti. The holidays commenced on January 11 and will continue through January 16. Classes will resume on Friday, January 17.
Additionally, the state government of Telangana has declared January 14 as a public holiday for Makar Sankranti. Earlier listed as a restricted holiday in the public holiday calendar, this change was officially ordered by Zuhair Bin Sagir, Special Secretary of the General Administration Department.
Jammu and Kashmir School Holidays
The School Education Department in Jammu and Kashmir has announced the following winter holiday schedule-
Schools up to Class 5: Closed from December 10, 2024, to February 28, 2025.
Schools for Classes 6 to 12: Closed from December 16, 2024, to February 28, 2025.
