Shubman Gill, who was suffering from dengue fever, could take part in his first training session over a week on Thursday in Ahmedabad, News18 CricketNext reported. The opener has missed India’s first two matches — against Australia and Afghanistan — in the ongoing World Cup 2023 and flew down to Ahmedabad from Chennai on Wednesday as he continues to recover from dengue.

“Gill took the evening flight from Chennai yesterday and reached Ahmedabad last night. He is now likely to hit the ground today and we will then see how the body reacts to physical activity. There is going to be no rush, one step at a time,” a source told CricketNext.

The Indian team is currently in Delhi where they defeated Afghanistan on Wednesday but Gill had stayed back in Chennai after his platelet count dropped below 1,00,000 which also resulted in him spending a night in a hospital. However, he is recovering well now and BCCI hopes to have him fit as soon as possible.

India play Pakistan on 14 October in Ahmedabad and even if Gill doesn’t get fit for the game, there’s no plan to seek a replacement, as India want to give him ample opportunities to make a return to the team.

In his absence, Ishan Kishan has been playing as an opener. He scored 0 and 47 in the first two matches of the World Cup.

“Shubman Gill will be given all the time to recover and regain match fitness. There is no thought of seeking or discussing replacements at this stage as the management considers him to be a vital cog in the set-up. Gill is already showing positive signs and is likely to make a return soon,” a senior BCCI official told News18 CricketNext a few days back.
