Despite a favorable release, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (MI8) has earned less than its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (MI7), in India. MI8's initial nine-day collection was Rs 72.3 crore, while MI7 made Rs 80.6 crore during the same period. Weak weekday performance and a lack of novelty compared to MI7 contributed to MI8's underperformance.
Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise has consistently delivered edge-of-the-seat action and box office success in India. However, the latest installment, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (MI8), has surprisingly fallen short of matching the numbers of its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (MI7), despite a seemingly favorable release window. In its first nine days, MI8 collected an estimated Rs 72.3 crore nett across all languages in India, whereas MI7 had amassed Rs 80.6 crore during the same period. What makes this comparison more intriguing is that MI8 benefitted from two weekends within its initial nine-day run, a luxury MI7 didn’t have.MI7 had opened on a Wednesday and capitalized on a robust five-day extended weekend, scoring Rs 63.5 crore in its first five days.
It recorded an impressive Rs 17.3 crore on its first Sunday and witnessed solid Saturday growth. MI8, on the other hand, despite releasing on a Saturday, saw a Rs 16.5 crore opening, followed by Rs 17 crore on Sunday — decent figures but not record-breaking by franchise standards. The issue became clearer during the weekdays. MI8 dropped sharply to Rs 5.75 crore on Monday, identical to Tuesday, and while the decline was controlled, it lacked the momentum MI7 had shown during its weekdays, where the drops were expected but better offset by stronger weekend figures.
Another crucial factor was the performance on its second weekend. MI8 did register an impressive 79% jump on its second Saturday, collecting Rs 7 crore, but that too only brought it on par with its opening weekend numbers — not enough to bridge the gap with MI7.A likely reason could be franchise fatigue, audience sentiment also suggested that while MI8 delivered on stunts and spectacle, it didn’t quite replicate the novelty and thrill of MI7.Though the film which opened in the United States of America and in many sectors across the globe has already collected over US $ 100 million with the film yet to open in China. As things stand, it’s evident that Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning couldn’t ride past Dead Reckoning’s high watermark.
The film featured Tom Cruise in his iconic role as Ethan Hunt, the film’s ensemble also includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, and Henry Czerny.
