United Airlines introduces new 45-minute check-in rule for domestic flights

As June approaches and summer travel ramps up, millions of Americans are heading to the skies. Over the Memorial Day weekend alone, AAA estimates that 3.61 million passengers will board flights across the US, a 2% jump from last year’s 3.55 million travellers. This year’s surge signals a strong return to air travel, with airlines expected to surpass pre-pandemic Memorial Day levels by 12%. However, the all-time record of 3.64 million flyers set in 2005 still holds, MSN reported. What is the new rule by United Airlines? In light of the busy season, United Airlines is making a key change to its check-in policy. From 3 June, domestic passengers travelling without checked bags will be required to check in at least 45 minutes before departure, up from the current 30-minute window. Those who miss the cutoff won’t be allowed to board. The 45-minute requirement already applies to domestic passengers with checked bags. International travellers will continue to have a 60-minute check-in deadline. The airline said that the new rule will increase efficiency and streamline the process of domestic flights. With this change set to be strictly enforced from early June, passengers are being urged to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare especially as the summer rush gets underway.

According to AAA, major cities such as Chicago, New York, Orlando, Denver and Seattle are among the most popular destinations this weekend. For budget-conscious holidaymakers, the travel organisation advises flying midweek as Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be cheaper in comparison to the weekend.
