A
passenger
was taken into custody at an
Australian airport
on Thursday after exiting a parked
airliner
through an
emergency exit
, walking on the wing, and descending to the tarmac via a
jet engine
, according to officials.
The incident took place when
Jetstar Flight JQ507
arrived at
Melbourne Airport
from Sydney and parked at a terminal gate. The man exited the aircraft through the right-side emergency exit, officials informed.
"The man was exhibiting some quite strange behavior," a passenger Audrey Varghese told Melbourne Radio 3AW.
She described how the man charged towards the emergency exit row, shoving people and causing commotion before ripping open the emergency door, which automatically deployed a slide from the wing to the ground. However, instead of using the slide, the man walked along the wing and climbed down one of the Airbus A320's engines, an official reported.
Another passenger, Maddison, informed Nine News television that the man had been vaping during the 90-minute mid-morning flight, which is prohibited, and had unsuccessfully demanded alcohol from the air crew.
Australian Federal Police officers arrested the man for "alleged aggressive behavior and breaching aircraft safety protocols". The man was assessed by paramedics and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Police are continuing their investigation, and charges are expected to be filed at a later date.
