When Harris married

Doug Emhoff

in 2014, she became a stepmother to Ella and Cole. It was Harris' first marriage and Doug Emhoff's second, as he has adult children with his ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff.

The siblings call Kamala "Momala" as an alternative to "stepmom" for their stepmother.
At the time of Harris and Doug Emhoff's wedding, Ella was still in high school, while 20-year-old Cole was attending Colorado College, where he earned a Psychology degree in 2017.

Cole works for the Plan B Entertainment, a production company co-founded by Brad Pitt that has produced three Academy Award winners for best picture in "The Departed" (which won for the year 2006), "12 Years A Slave" (2013) and "Moonlight" (2016), not to mention upcoming film "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" and Netflix hits "The Killer" and "3 Body Problem."
According to Elle, Cole married production development manager Greenley Littlejohn, with Kamala Harris officiating the ceremony.

Ella is a model, pursuing a career in fashion and design. After studying design and textiles in New York City, she caught attention in the fashion world after the Biden/Harris 2021 inauguration ceremony, during which she wore a gem-covered Miu Miu coat.
She signed with IMG Models Worldwide a week later and made her Met Gala debut in the year 2021, the same year when she graduated from the Parsons School of Design.
An active knitter, Ella has used her craft to build community and founded the Soft Hands Knit Club in New York City, "to explore opportunities in fashion, design, creative consulting and hosting events."
Harper's Bazaar recognised her impact in fashion by naming her to its 2023 list of icons.
In a 2019 Elle essay, Harris shared that her stepchildren are named after jazz legends, with Cole honouring saxophonist John Coltrane and Ella paying tribute to Ella Fitzgerald.
On the second day of Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, Barack Obama energised the crowd with a powerful endorsement of Kamala Harris, whereas Michelle spoke and praised Kamala as a candidate of exceptional caliber.
“Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency,” she said.
