The Indian team has started a unique tradition after every match in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. There is special medal ceremony to honour the best fielder, a recognition presented within the confines of the dressing room after each match.

KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have already been recipients of this distinguished award.

After India’s emphatic win over England on Sunday, wicketkeeper KL Rahul achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first Indian cricketer to secure the ‘best fielder’ medal for the second time. Rahul was very good behind the stumps and was the only fielder to take catch since all the other English batters and bowlers succumbed to leg-before, bowled, or stumping dismissals.

After the match, the BCCI, in their characteristic style, unveiled Rahul’s name as the ‘best fielder.’ This time, the contenders included substitute fielder Ishan Kishan and pacer Mohammed Siraj besides Rahul.

Fielding coach T Dilip orchestrated the announcement in a grand fashion. The entire Indian team emerged from the dressing room and the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow plunged into darkness, with only Rahul’s name and jersey number illuminated. Notably, KL Rahul leads the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and this is his home ground.

Rahul had earlier clinched the ‘best fielder’ title after India’s triumph over arch-rivals Pakistan in an ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad earlier this month.

The Indian wicketkeeper played a key role with the bat as well when he scored a crucial 39 off 58 balls against England on Sunday. In partnership with his captain Rohit Sharma, Rahul added a valuable 91-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Rohit himself led the batting charts with an impressive 87 in the match after which the Indian fast bowlers set the stage on fire with Mohammed Shami picking 4 while Jasprit Bumrah picking 3 wickets to give India the win by 100 runs.
