The Indian film industry has lost yet another gem, as actor Mukul Dev breathed his last at the age of 54. According to an IANS report, the actor passed away on May 23, 2025, and his sudden demise has left a void in the hearts of fans and colleagues alike. Though the actor is no more with us, he has left behind a legacy of his cinematic marvels. From the small screen to the 70mm, from Hindi to Punjabi. Mukul Dev worked in different formats and genres. He was introduced to the world of entertainment at a very young age. He was 8 when he impersonated Michael Jackson at Doordarshan. Every first of his left a lasting impression, like his debut in Bollywood, which was alongside none other than Sushmita Sen.
Mukul Dev's memorable debut in ‘Dastak’
Mukul Dev had an impressive entry into Bollywood in 1996 with the psychological thriller ‘Dastak’, directed by Mahesh Bhatt. He played the role of ACP Rohit Malhotra, sharing the screen with Sushmita Sen, who was also debuting in films. The story centered on a beauty queen being pursued by a menacing admirer, with Mukul's character tasked with ensuring her safety. His portrayal was praised for its depth and authenticity, signaling a strong beginning to his film career.
‘Dastak’ was not supposed to be his debut film?
In 2021, a Hindustan Times report stated that Mukul Dev, on 25 years of ‘Dasktak’ shared, that he was signed by Amitabh Bachchan’s company and his debut was supposed to be ‘Naam Kya Hai.’ However, fate had something else in store for the actor. The said movie never materialised, but helped him gain fame. The actor said, “It's promos were out on TV. I came into the limelight because of that. Mahesh Bhatt (filmmaker) saab had seen them and had also watched me on TV.
These two things played in my favour.”In the same report, he spoke about working with Sushmita and how his debut felt all things dreamy. “I knew Sushmita from my Delhi days when we were modelling. It was a dreamy red carpet launch that anyone could ever get. It was wonderful to work with Sushmita, Bhatt saab, and Sharad (Kapoor). We were all so new at that time; a lot of guidance came our way,” quoted Mukul Dev.
