Aamir Khan's decision to support Ashutosh Gowariker’s '
Lagaan
' wasn’t immediate. He had significant doubts and struggled to muster the courage to commit to the film, and even though he found the script excellent, he couldn’t bring himself to join.
In an interview with ViralBollywood, Aamir revealed that the film was so unconventional and broke many mainstream cinema rules that he couldn’t envision a producer backing it sincerely.
He even wondered who would be willing to produce such an ambitious project, which required going to England, casting British actors, and giving it the necessary scale. Ultimately, Aamir decided to produce the film himself, marking his debut as a producer.
After considerable hesitation, Khan encouraged Gowariker to present 'Lagaan' to other producers and actors. He also advised him to explore other potential leads for the project.
He also recalled that during Ashutosh’s pitch to other producers and actors, someone suggested altering the climax to have Bhuvan try to stab the British officer instead of the film's poetic match-winning ending. Despite these opinions, only a few acknowledged the script's excellence.
'Lagaan' emerged as one of Khan’s most successful films and received an
Oscar
nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
