, the actor opened up about how the film’s first promo was met with confusion and disapproval from audiences, and how even legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan had his doubts about the teaser he had agreed to dub.
Delhi Belly, featuring Aamir's nephew Imran Khan alongside Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur, drew attention for its unapologetically abusive dialogues and dark comedic tone at the time. The film, co-directed by Abhinay Deo and written by Akshat Verma, followed the chaotic lives of three roommates who unwittingly become entangled in a gangster’s hunt for missing diamonds.

Speaking about the initial teaser that didn’t land well with audiences, Aamir admitted, “One of the many times we’ve gone wrong. We thought it was an amazing teaser, that people would laugh a lot—we were making fun of ourselves and shared it in a humorous way.”

He then revealed that Amitabh Bachchan, who had lent his voice to the teaser, wasn’t entirely convinced at first. “I requested Amit ji to dub the dialogues. He read them and said, ‘Hmm, acha,’ with a strange expression on his face. He even saw the trailer and asked me, ‘Aamir, are you sure this is alright?’ I said, ‘Yes sir, no worries.’ Unhone dub acha kiya tha (he dubbed the teaser well). He has so much emotion in his voice,” Aamir recalled.

The actor also responded to a clip featuring director Abhinay Deo, writer Akshat Verma, and actor Vir Das reflecting on the teaser’s reception.
Aamir commissioned a new teaser to better convey the film’s edgy humour. “I enjoyed both making and watching this trailer—I’m enjoying it even now. When it was released, people thought we were praising ourselves. They just couldn’t understand what we were trying to do. We received such a poor reaction that I asked them to remove that promo and make another one,” he explained.
He also expressed concern about maintaining trust with his audience. “I was worried because I never want to disappoint my audience. They shouldn’t feel that Aamir invited us in, and now we’re not liking what he’s showing us. I’m very conscious of that. Hence, we released this teaser so that people would know the film contains abusive language. Moreover, it also had a humorous element,” he said.
Towards the end of the video, Aamir playfully questioned the language choice of his colleagues in the promo discussion. “Yeh teeno itna English mein kyun baat kar rahe hain? Apni audience Hindi ki hai, humko angrezi mein nahi chahiye. I feel that jitna kam angrezi istemal karein utna better hai (Why are the three of them speaking so much in English? Our audience is Hindi-speaking; we don’t need English. The less English we use, the better),” he remarked.
'Delhi Belly' has since gained a cult following for breaking cinematic conventions and embracing its quirky, unfiltered voice.
