Report finds that DGP Ramachandra Rao knew of Ranya Rao's protocol use

A recent investigation report into the

gold smuggling case

involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao has provided new information about her stepfather, Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao's involvement in the ongoing case. The probe, led by Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta, examined allegations of misuse of police protocol and the potential involvement of Ramachandra Rao in the smuggling case.

Findings on Ramachandra Rao's involvement

As per a Moneycontrol report, the investigation revealed that Ramachandra Rao was aware that his stepdaughter had received

protocol assistance

and used his official car on multiple occasions from the airport. However, the report found no concrete evidence linking him directly to arranging these services for gold smuggling purposes. While he knew about the protocol services being extended to Ranya, there was no indication that these were used for illegal activities.

Violation of conduct rules

The report also stated that providing protocol services to a relative at the airport violates

civil service conduct rules

, as these services are meant solely for official use. The government will now decide whether to take action against him for violating conduct rules.
Ramachandra Rao has been serving as DGP since October 2023 and is also the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. His tenure has faced scrutiny in the past, particularly during his time as Inspector General of Police for the Southern Range, when his name surfaced in a case involving a large cash seizure.

About the case

For the unversed, Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport on March 3 after

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence

(DRI) officials discovered 14.2 kg of gold bars worth Rs 12.5 crore in her possession upon her arrival from Dubai.
