 ‘He wasn’t a star'

Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan’s enduring friendship began during Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). Their bond, built on mutual support and fun, evolved into a successful creative partnership with hits like Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, and Happy New Year, showcasing their unique synergy in Bollywood.

In Bollywood, strong professional bonds often lead to repeated collaborations among actors, directors, producers, and singers. Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan’s partnership is a perfect example of this trend.

Farah recently reflected on their journey together, explaining that their connection has always been more than just work-related; it’s been a genuine friendship filled with fun and mutual understanding since Shah Rukh’s early days in the industry.Early CollaborationDuring a masterclass on choreography and direction, Farah Khan reflected on her early career and explained how she approaches creating dance steps.

She recalled her experience working on Kundan Shah’s 1994 film 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa', where she first collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan. Farah described their relationship at the time as informal and fun, since Shah Rukh wasn’t yet a big star. She shared, “With him, the fun lay in the fact that when we were doing the film, he wasn’t an established star, and we all had that informal relationship with each other.

We used to party together, SRK, me and Gauri, and because we were all close to the same age, we had the same sense of humour and similar habits.

I was never in awe of him because we were very comfortable with each other, but I always knew that there was something very special about him.”Shah Rukh’s Supportive Nature on SetFarah recalled how Shah Rukh was incredibly supportive and hardworking during the film’s shoot, often going beyond his role to ensure everything ran smoothly. She appreciated having him on set, especially since there were no assistants to help out.

As she explained, “It was great to have him on set. He was always running around and helping me because there were no assistants. Kundan was saving money back then, and we couldn’t afford the extra people, so he was always ready to help.

Amusingly I got paid more than anyone who worked on that film, even more than Shah Rukh. He got around 25k, and I was supposed to get 5k for each song, and I ended up doing six songs, so I got 30k for that movie."Reunion and Continued SuccessA decade after their first collaboration on 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa', Farah and Shah Rukh reunited for 'Main Hoon Na' in 2004, marking Farah’s debut as a director. This film remains one of Shah Rukh’s most cherished works. Their partnership continued with Farah directing Shah Rukh in two more successful films, 'Om Shanti Om' (2007) and 'Happy New Year' (2014), strengthening their creative bond as director and actor.
