Pop star Katy Perry is set to blast off into space today on a groundbreaking spaceflight as part of Blue Origin’s first all-female spaceflight mission, NS-31.
The 10-minute suborbital trip aboard the rocket will mark a historic moment in space travel. With the clock counting down to the big takeoff on Monday morning, Katy took to Instagram to share her excitement. In a video, she shared a clip of the capsule in which she underwent training. "I’ve dreamt of going to space for 15 years, and tomorrow, that dream becomes a reality," she captioned the post.
"The Taking Up Space Crew launches tomorrow morning at 7am CT and I am SO honored to be alongside 5 other incredible and inspiring women as we become the first ever all female flight space crew," she added.
The mission will lift off from Blue Origin's launch site in West Texas and includes a six-member crew. Alongside Perry are Lauren Sanchez — pilot, philanthropist, and partner of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — as well as engineer Aisha Bowe, scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, and broadcast legend Sara King.
NS-31 will be the 31st flight of the company's reusable rocket system and the 11th crewed mission. It’s also the first all-female spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s historic solo journey in 1963.
While this mission will be brief — lasting just over 10 minutes — the capsule will pass the Karman Line, the internationally recognised boundary of space 100 kilometres above Earth, offering them moments of weightlessness and breathtaking views of the planet before they beign their descent.
Speaking to the Associated Press from her California rehearsal space last week, she said, “It’s an important moment for the future of commercial space travel and for humanity in general — and for women all around.”
Perry, who has long championed women's empowerment through her music, said that she hopes to inspire young girls around the world to see space as a real possibility. “No limitations,” she said. “You’re brave, you’re bold, you are doing this for the next generation.”
The singer has been preparing mentally and emotionally for this journey to space. She said, “I’m excited to learn more about STEM, about what it really takes to accomplish something like this."
Live coverage of the launch will be available on Blue Origin’s official channels.
