Rakesh Roshan is now known as one of Bollywood’s most successful filmmakers, but there was a time when he put everything on the line—his house, his cars, even his office—to launch his son Hrithik Roshan into films. That turning point came with the 2000 blockbuster '
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai
.' In a recent interview, Rakesh’s daughter
Sunaina Roshan
opened up about the difficult times their father faced and how he never let the family know what he was going through.
A dream fueled by risk
Before becoming a top director and producer, Rakesh Roshan had a decent acting career. But his real test came when he wanted to launch Hrithik. In her interview with News18, Sunaina Roshan said, “We were very young to understand, especially when Dad started his acting career. As a producer, he had mortgaged his house twice, and the cars and the office during 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' and 'Khudgarz.' He gambled with his life a lot, but he was fearless in doing so.”
At the time, Sunaina and Hrithik were just kids. She remembers how they were completely unaware of the stress their father was under. “We never knew that side of him because he never showed us what we were going through. My brother and I both had a very peaceful childhood,” she said.
No signs of trouble at home
Sunaina shared that even though Rakesh Roshan was carrying huge financial burdens, he never let it affect his home life. “We never had to deal with people talking about our backgrounds because times were very different back then. There was no social media, thankfully, and Dad himself didn’t make it that big,” she added.
The shocking truth Hrithik didn’t know
Hrithik himself found out the truth much later. He only realized how much was at stake during a disagreement with his dad while working on 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.' The scene is described in the documentary 'The Roshans.' Hrithik said, “I always saw the glass half-full. I had not color-corrected two or three scenes because I was handling that. And the overseas prints had already been sent. So, I came to my dad, really upset that, ‘How could you let that go?’ And I think that was the first time that my dad gave it back to me. He gave it back to me in my face. He turned to my mom, and he said, ‘I am doing everything for him, and he’s sitting here, and he’s complaining.’ And that’s the night I found out, my mom told me, that the house was mortgaged, the cars were mortgaged… I realized how much was at stake.”
