Samantha and Varun Dhawan will not be returning for another thrilling adventure, as Amazon has officially pulled the plug on their International Emmy Award-nominated series 'Citadel: Honey Bunny'. The series, that was an international spinoff of the Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden-led 'Citadel', has officially been cancelled after one season, along with the Italian spinoff, 'Citadel: Diana'.
Deadline broke the news, nearly a month after the portal first claimed that Citadel Season two has been delayed to 2026. The decision is reportedly part of a strategic shift in the streaming giant’s global plans that will now see both storylines being integrated into the upcoming Season 2 of the flagship Citadel series.
In a statement reported by the portal, Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios said, "Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series."
He also admitted that while the series has been successful, the "international chapters will not continue as individual series."
Citadel: Honey Bunny, starring Samantha and Varun, and Citadel: Diana, featuring Matilda De Angelis, premiered in December and September 2024, respectively. Although both received strong responses in their local markets, they failed to break out globally, leading to uncertainty about the future of the series that would lead to spin-offs of in various other countries.
The studio also confirmed that Citadel is currently in post-production, and will have a global premiere slated for the second quarter of 2026, thus arriving nearly three years after the debut of Season 1 in April 2023.
According to the platform, the second season will deepen the emotional arcs of Nadia (Priyanka Chopra), Mason (Richard Madden), and Orlick (Stanley Tucci), as they confront the rising threat of the shadowy organisation Manticore. The season promises high-stakes action, bold cinematic storytelling, and new cast additions to elevate the espionage saga.
