Bollywood
legends. Sharing anecdotes about her iconic film '
Kashmir Ki Kali
', Sharmila highlighted the unparalleled energy and spontaneity of her co-star, Shammi Kapoor, describing him as a "brand of his own."
The discussion began with a photograph from the sets of Kashmir Ki Kali, sparking fond memories of shooting in the picturesque landscapes of Shopian. Sharmila recalled the challenge of matching Shammi Kapoor’s boundless energy. “The film had terrific songs, and Shammi ji was 200 times better than I was. I was nervous about dancing and was just trying to keep up with him,” she admitted.
Sharmila elaborated on Shammi Kapoor’s unique style, calling him unpredictable yet captivating. “He would do one thing in the rehearsal and something entirely different in the take. For a newcomer like me, it was slightly difficult, but it was fun. He had his own brand of spontaneity,” she told The Indian Express.
Drawing comparisons to contemporary stars, Sharmila remarked that Shammi Kapoor’s flamboyant personality and knack for spontaneously breaking into dance were way ahead of his time. “In 1964, Shammi ji was doing things like showcasing spontaneous madness. That’s something actors like Shah Rukh Khan did much later. Shammi ji was truly a superstar,” she said, acknowledging his pioneering contribution to Hindi cinema.
Interestingly, the actress also addressed a viral AI-generated video that reimagined actors Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in her and Shammi’s iconic roles. While she appreciated the versatility of today’s actors, she emphasized that Shammi Kapoor’s charm was inimitable. “I saw the video, and while it’s fascinating, Shammi ji’s magic is unmatched. Today’s actors are versatile, but Shammi ji was unique,” she noted.
