01/5Most powerful dhanushas
The bow and arrow was one of the most sought after weapons during ancient times. From Shiv ji’s Pinaka to Lord Rama’s Kodanda, these bows were believed to have immense power and destroying them was next to impossible. They were usually crafted by the divine architect Viswakarma and were passed on from the Gods to their avatars. These bows were a symbol of power, valour, and divine weaponry.
Here we list the 4 most powerful ‘dhanush’ or bows from Hindu epics.
02/5Gandiva
Gandiva is one of the most famous and powerful bows in Hindu legends. It is famed for its association with Lord Krishna and Arjuna in the epic Mahabharata and was designed by the divine architect Vishwakarma. The Gandiva is described as massive, radiant, and capable of unleashing a rain of arrows. Its strings were said to be made of cosmic elements, adding to its divine prowess. It is also said that the bow had 108 strings and was impossible to break.
Arjuna is said to have used the Gandiva with unparalleled skill and precision and it played a great role in the great Kurukshetra war.
03/5Sarang
Another mighty bow mentioned in Hindu legends is the Sarang. Sarang was a part of Ramayana and was carried by Lord Rama himself. Sarang is described as a divine bow with immense strength and accuracy, capable of striking down foes with ease. In the Ramayana, Sarang played an important role in Lord Rama's struggle to rescue Mata Sita and his war with the demon king Ravana.
It was with Sarang that Lord Rama shot the arrow that ultimately killed Ravana, marking the victory of good over evil.
04/5Pinaka
Pinaka is said to be the bow of Lord Shiva that was broken by Lord Rama to win Mata Sita’s hand in the Swayamwar.
It is often depicted as a simple but very strong and unbreakable bow that was crafted from the horn of a demon named Mura. Pinaka was a symbol of destruction but also renewal and transformation, and its accidental breaking by Lord Rama made Parashurama extremely angry. It is believed that Pinaka would have caused unparalleled devastation, and could destroy entire armies and worlds.
05/5Vijaya
Vijaya is the bow carried by Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu and a formidable warrior sage. Parashurama, a sage originally, took weapons in his hand to slay the kings who were oppressive towards their subjects. According to legend, Vijaya was gifted to Lord Parashurama by Lord Shiva himself, symbolising the union of divine powers. (All images are representational and generated with MidJourney)
