Plan your dream terrace
While balcony and kitchen gardens have an easier growing process, with more space, comes more work. And so, before moving on to a terrace garden, here are some things that should be kept in mind.

Plan the space
Before you bring in the pots, and plants, and flowers, assess the space available on your terrace. Plan where the pots will be kept and where the sunlight will be best. And then plan the types of plants you wish to grow.

Containers and pots
If you have a wide terrace with ample space there is no harm in experimenting with pots. Choose heavy planters, wooden boxes, hanging baskets, or even waste, empty buckets for the plants that spread wild. Make sure they have holes below to allow drainage.

Soil check
Different types of soil react differently to the sun condition. And good soil is extremely important for the plants to grow well. So, in the pots or containers that you finalise make sure to add a good soil mix rich in nutrients and organic matter.

How will you water the plants?
It is a huge task to carry buckets of water every day upstairs to water the plants and this task will make you care less for them. So, make sure that there is some form of water supply on the terrace that will help with watering. Add in a hose or pipe to help during the sunny days.

Best spot for sunlight
Even on a terrace, there are certain places where the sun shines best and others have better shade. So, sow the seeds according to the sunlight needed. Most plants need at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight and others grow well in shade as well.

Fertilisers for plants
To keep the plants healthy, add organic fertilisers like fermented rice water, banana-peel-infused water, or green tea. You can also add some fertilisers that are bought from your local nursery, as per your plants' needs.

Get some tools and equipment
Mixing different soils by hand is not just unsafe but can also result in blisters. So, keep the right tools at hand. Gloves, mini shovels, hand trowels, a watering can or hose, a garden fork, etc, are all good investments for gardening.

Insect problems
An open terrace is a welcome mat for insects. From flies to worms, they can all ruin your plant. So, make sure to get some nets and cover a certain area to avoid this problem. Or, spray neem oil on the plants to keep insects away.

Now select the plants
After all the space, soil, sunlight, and watering needs are met, then choose the plants that will be right for your garden. Get aloe vera for the shaded spot where the water hose can't reach, buy sunflowers for the site where the sun is bright, and likewise.

Maintain the garden
While the terrace garden won't begin flowering overnight, with steady maintenance it will flourish. Regularly water, prune, and inspect your plants and remove weeds and dead leaves to keep your garden tidy.
