In the second fixture of the Saturday double-header — the first of the 13th edition of cricket’s showpiece event — South Africa rode on blazing centuries from Quinton de Kock (100), Rassie van der Dussen (108) and Aiden Markram (106) to post 428/5 on the board.

The Proteas ended up breaking the record for the highest total in Men’s ICC World Cup history, surpassing Australia’s 417/6 against Ireland in 2015.

This is some gauntlet set down by South Africa in their #icccricketworldcup2023. Class 💯s from De Kock and Rassie. But that Aiden Markram century is special, power and class.

Sri Lanka came up with a spirited reply after getting off to a shaky start in their run-chase. However, despite fighting half-centuries from Kusal Mendis (76), Charith Asalanka (79) and Dasun Shanaka (68), the 42-run target proved too steep for the 1996 world champions and they fell more than a hundred runs short despite a score of 326.

Pacer Gerald Coetzee, making his first World Cup appearance, was the pick of the Proteas attack with figures of 3/68 while Kagiso Rabada (2/50), Keshav Maharaj (2/62) and Marco Jansen (2/92) grabbed two wickets each.

Brief Scores: South Africa 428/5 in 50 overs (Rassie van der Dussen 108, Aiden Markram 106, Quinton de Kock 100; Dilshan Madushanka 2/86) defeated Sri Lanka 326 in 44.5 overs (Charith Asalanka 79, Kusal Mendis 76; Gerald Coetzee 3/68) by 102 runs.
