Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut, who is currently busy with the promotions of her upcoming film ‘Emergency’, will portray the role of
former prime minister
Indira Gandhi in the film. The actress remarked that Gandhi hailed from a "privileged, nepotistic" background but was motivated to make a name for herself.
The film, which is directed by Kangana, revolves mostly around the emergency years.
In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the actor discussed the qualities of Gandhi that she liked and disliked.
The actress shared the things she liked about
Indira Gandhi
and called her determination worth applauding. She said, “Yes she was privileged and she was coming from a
nepotism
background. After all, she was the PM’s daughter. She held official positions during her father’s term. I mean, what more privilege can one get in politics? She was coming from a privileged space but she had the determination that I have to prove myself. That determination was worth applauding. She might have gotten a lot of privileges but whenever she was criticised, she proved herself and she came out a complete winner.”
Then, Kangana Ranaut discussed her dislikes of Indira Gandhi, implying that the former prime minister lacked the maturity required for her job. “The negative thing, someone’s manufactured struggle can’t be real. The fact that she didn’t face any natural struggle in her life and her dealing with it was not coming from a mature space, it still came from a space where she was thinking like the PM’s daughter. That was not a good thing. Because when you are in that chair, you need to be selfless. You can’t operate from a place of ego,” she further added.
Kangana portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film ‘Emergency’. It narrates the story of Gandhi's reign by focusing on the 21-month Emergency period that lasted from 1975 to 1977. The film also starred Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade and the late Satish Kaushik in the pivotal roles. It is scheduled to hit the big screens on September 6.
