Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action thriller,
L2: Empuraan
, has stormed the box office, becoming the second-highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema history. The film, released on March 27, 2025, has set new industry benchmarks, with its worldwide collection soaring to ₹201 crore.
Before L2: Empuraan, the 2023 survival drama 2018, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph and starring Tovino Thomas, held the title of the second-biggest Malayalam film with a global earnings of ₹177 crore. The film, which depicted the devastating
Kerala floods
, struck an emotional chord with audiences. However, the record for the highest-grossing Malayalam film remains with
Manjummel Boys
, which amassed a staggering Rs 242 crore. In just five days, L2: Empuraan collected nearly Rs 78 crore from India, while its overseas earnings reached an impressive $14.3 million (Rs 123 crore).
Despite its success, the film faced controversy in India over allegations of promoting an ‘anti-Hindu agenda’ due to its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The backlash led to Mohanlal addressing the concerns on social media. In his statement, he expressed regret over any distress caused, saying, "I have come to know that certain political and social themes in Empuraan, the second installment in the
Lucifer franchise
, have caused considerable distress among many of my loved ones. As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my films promote hatred towards any political movement, ideology, or religious group. Therefore, both I and the Empuraan team sincerely regret the distress caused. We take full responsibility and acknowledge that such issues should be addressed. For over four decades, it is you, the audience, who have been part of my cinematic journey. Your love and trust are my strength. I believe there is no Mohanlal beyond that.” Following this, actor-director Prithviraj also shared Mohanlal’s statement, further addressing the concerns.
The phenomenal success of L2: Empuraan marks another milestone in Malayalam cinema’s evolution, highlighting its bold storytelling, technical brilliance, and global appeal. As the industry continues to push creative boundaries, films like L2: Empuraan and 2018 reinforce the strength of Malayalam storytelling and its ability to resonate with audiences worldwide.
