Samantha backed Subham fails to cross Rs 4 cr mark in India

Subham, the latest Telugu comedy-horror backed by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, hit the screens last week with modest expectations. Directed by Praveen Kandregula and featuring a relatively fresh cast including Harshith Reddy, Gavireddy Srinivas, Charan Peri, Shriya Kontham, Shravani Lakshmi, Shalini Kondepudi, and Vamshidhar Goud, the film had generated decent pre-release buzz — largely owing to Samantha herself making a special guest appearance. However, despite the early curiosity, the film has struggled to make a mark at the domestic box office.

In its first week, Subham managed a total collection of Rs 3.93 crore, falling short of the Rs 4 crore mark . The day-wise collections painted a grim picture, with the opening day bringing in just Rs 38 lakh and subsequent days offering no significant growth. Even weekends, typically a crucial period for small-budget films to pick up, failed to deliver a turnaround.

What makes the situation more concerning is that the film was made on a budget of Rs 6 crore, including promotional expenses. With less than Rs 4 crore earned in its first week, the film faces an uphill battle to recover its investment through its theatrical run in India.

However, in an interesting twist, Subham has managed to strike a chord with a niche audience in North America. In just six days, the film reportedly collected around Rs1.8 crore in the overseas market, especially in cities with a strong Telugu diaspora. This international response has come as a small relief for the makers, partially offsetting the domestic underperformance.Subham may not emerge as a commercial success in India, the film’s overseas numbers — combined with post-theatrical deals — could help it inch closer to break-even status in the long run. For now, though, Subham stands as a reminder that star power, even in the form of a cameo, isn't always enough to guarantee box office success for small films.For past some time there has been rumours of Samantha's possible link up with Raj Nidimoru of Raj and DK fame, the man behind titles like The Family Man, Farzi, Guns and Gulaabs and many more.
