'But he loves me like mad, so it seems worth it, even his physical absence'

Hema Malini got married to Dharmendra when he was already married to Prakash Kaur and had four children - Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta and Ajieta. Hema and Dharmendra got married in 1980 but she was staying separately from him.

He was staying with his first wife and family for the large part of his life. In an interview, when asked about something she missed out on with Dharmendra, the actress had regretted not getting enough time with him.

Though, she also added that she had accepted the situation. She had said in an interview with National Herald in 2028 when asked about her unconventional marriage with Dharmendra. She had said, "I wouldn’t say everything is perfect.

One doesn’t always get what one wants in life. When one is younger one dreams of a perfect life, which doesn’t exist. I didn’t get everything that I wanted. But I never gave myself the opportunity to miss all the things that I didn’t have. I had my two daughters.

The last 30 years of my life just sped by with them. Taking them to school, looking at their homework, doing their hair and managing their tantrums I relived my own childhood. Now when they’re grown up I suddenly look back and I feel, arrey, I missed out on something!"She further added how she came to terms with it.

Hema revealed, "Maybe I expected more of my husband’s company. I thought we’ll be together more often. I never felt that absence until now. When I married I thought we’d come to an arrangement that would suit all of us. Lekin nahin hua. But it’s okay. I accept the situation. I got my daughters. He has many problems to look after. As a human being I’m bound to have regrets….But he loves me like mad.

When I think of his feelings for me everything seems worth it, even his physical absence."She also opened up on how she never wanted things to happen in this way, in another interview. She said on a chat with Lehren Retro, "Nobody wants to be like that; it happens. Automatically, what happens, you have to accept. Otherwise nobody will feel like they want to live their life like this. Every woman wants to have a husband, children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way… I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it.

I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well," she said.

Hema and Dharmendra have two daughters - Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
