During the interaction, Emraan revealed that his son Ayaan, now a teenager, is not just pursuing chess as a hobby but has established himself as a competitive player with an international rating. “He had gone to Europe now for a tournament. So, he's enjoying it,” Emraan shared proudly. When asked if Ayaan was considering chess professionally, Emraan clarified, “He is a chess player. He’s got an international rating. Right now, he's around 1700. So, it goes up and down, but yeah, he competes regularly in Mumbai, across India, and even abroad.”
The actor spoke about how Ayaan’s interest in chess blossomed naturally over time. “He just picked it up. He’s someone who has this kind of knack for it, I guess. It started off when he was pretty young and he nurtured it. More than me, I think my wife has been instrumental in pushing him for these tournaments and nurturing those skills,” Emraan added, crediting his wife Parveen for encouraging Ayaan’s passion.
But this story of triumph isn’t just about chess. Years ago, Ayaan was diagnosed with cancer at the tender age of four, a life-altering moment for the Hashmi family. Reflecting on those testing times, Emraan said, “I think we just emerged as a unit stronger than before. It was a learning. Five long, testing years of our life. We just wanted to give back through this experience. That’s why I wrote the book.”
Emraan’s memoir
The Kiss of Life
: How A Superhero and My Son Defeated Cancer chronicles their emotional battle, the uncertainty, and the eventual recovery. Through the book, Emraan hoped to inspire other parents, fighters, and survivors navigating similar battles.
