The death of
former child actress
Sophie Nyweide at just 24 sent shockwaves on Monday. However, with investigations now underway, the tragic circumstances of her death are now coming to light.
According to the latest reports, authorities are confirming that they are exploring “a range of possible causes, including foul play.” Nyweide, best known for her roles in Noah and Mammoth, was reportedly found dead in a wooded area near a riverbank in Bennington, Vermont, on April 14. According to a death certificate obtained by People, the actress was also pregnant at the time. The report further states that the pregnancy is believed to have been in its early stages.
The Vermont Department of Health confirmed that Sophie was declared dead at the scene when her body was discovered at around 4 am, approximately 25 miles from her residence in Manchester Center.
The Bennington Police Department said in a statement to The Post, “This is an open investigation and we are still waiting on final autopsy and toxicology reports from the Vermont Office of Chief Medical Examiner.”
A man was reportedly with Nyweide at the time of her death. Police say he is cooperating with the investigation and is not currently considered a suspect or person of interest.
The actress made her acting debut in 2006's Bella, and later starred in Mammoth, portraying the daughter of characters played by Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal.
Her family confirmed her death in an obituary and described her as someone who found solace in creativity. The tribute also noted her vulnerabilities, saying her trusting nature sometimes led to people “taking advantage” of her, and that she used art as a means to process her trauma and pain.
