For years, there’s been endless gossip about Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi’s whirlwind romance – and why it ended so suddenly. While the rumours had painted Bedi as the man who walked away, he once opened up and shared his side of the story.
A star-crossed romance
In the glamorous world of the 1980s, Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi’s relationship grabbed plenty of attention. Their love story began after Bedi’s marriage with Odissi dancer Protima Bedi came to an end. Around the same time, Parveen was also healing from a breakup with actor Danny Denzongpa.
In his autobiography ‘Stories I Must Tell: The Emotional Life of an Actor’, Bedi described how their romance began during a difficult chapter in his life. “Parveen was very delicate,” he wrote, noting that she was vulnerable and looking for comfort. Their relationship was intense, passionate, and very much in the public eye.
A trip that changed everything
The turning point in their relationship came during a trip to Europe. Bedi revealed in a past interview with Digital Commentary that while they were in London, he noticed that Parveen was not well. He began to realise she was showing signs of paranoia and mental stress. “Vo toh isliye humare relationship ki khatam hui kyunki jab Italy ke baad hum London aaye mai ne dekha uski condition kharab ho rahi hai. Aur usko yeh manjoor nahi tha, jab ki mai janta tha ki agar vo treatment nahi legi toh haal bigadta jayega. Or is baat pe huamri separation hogayi,” he shared. (Our relationship ended because after we came to London from Italy, I saw that her condition was getting worse. And she couldn’t accept that. I knew that if she didn’t get treatment, things would get worse. And that’s what led to our separation.)
Parveen walked away first
Despite what the rumours swirled, Bedi says Parveen ended the relationship – not him. He tried to help her get the treatment she needed, but she was scared it would ruin her image and career. “She left me is darr ke ki he will force me to have treatment. Or paranoid mind jo hote hai vo her cheej se darte hai toh usko laga doctor ko pata chal gaya toh vo industry ko bta dega, mera career khatam ho jayega. Toh Parveen Babi left me, I didn’t left her,” Bedi said. (She left me out of fear that I would force her to get treatment. And people with a paranoid mind are scared of everything. She thought if the doctor found out, he might tell the industry, and her career would be over. So Parveen Babi left me, I didn’t leave her.)
At the time, mental health was not openly discussed in the film industry. Parveen was afraid that if her condition became public, she would lose work and be judged harshly.
But Bedi stood firm and finally set the record straight: “Yeh baat sahi hai ki media yaha, usne mujhe doshi theraya ki mai ne Parveen ko reject kara isliye Parveen ka dimag kharab hogya. Sach yeh tha ki Parveen had mental problems before.” (It’s true that the media here blamed me – saying that I rejected Parveen, and that’s why she lost her mind. But the truth is that Parveen had mental problems even before that.)
He added that he always cared for her and only wanted her to get help. But Parveen’s fear of exposure was stronger than his attempts to support her.
